CSP 2 vs CSP 3: a field guide to concrete surface profiles
What the ICRI chips actually mean, and why mechanical prep beats acid etching for solids systems.

Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) is a 1–10 scale that describes how rough prepared concrete is. Most coatings specify a target range, and hitting it is the single biggest factor in long-term adhesion.
Thin films: CSP 1–2
Sealers and thin water-based coatings bond well to a light profile. A fine diamond grind or even a good etch can get you there.
Build coats: CSP 2–3
100% solids epoxy and polyaspartic systems want a CSP 2–3. That means a proper diamond grind — acid etching rarely reaches it evenly and leaves residue behind.
Check your work
Compare the ground slab to a set of ICRI profile chips, and do a water-drop test: water should soak in within a minute or two across the whole floor.
